A Spare Bedroom

The best space for its ability to be closed off, private and for getting your work done!  This is where I work from, and I am grateful for a space that is quiet, private and allows full creativity.

These gorgeous spaces below are full of natural light, and tons of storage!  Key ingredients for Home Office Design.

Seek balance and inspiration in the spaces you create.  This space has lots of visual interest with antiques, area rugs, artwork and personal items.

A Squeeze Under the Stairs

Have you thought about stealing space from here for your Home Office?  You can tuck in shelves, install a long shelf for a desk, and stow your office chair in this space. Lighting options can include strip lighting, puck lighting, wall mount and task lighting.  Under the Stairs  is ideal for built-ins, and perfect for those who need a space for their craft or hobby materials.

Be smart with storage on shelves and with niches.  The more you can keep off your surface, the more clean and organized you will feel.  This includes the lighting, which would be awesome if you could have it be either hardwired or wireless.

A Closet

This space works really well for the well organized!  Use pre-existing shelves or install new to not only provide you with storage, but also the ability to close the door when your day is done.   You can get creative with the kind of door you install, or even just leave it open.

A Niche – This works if you’re tight on space and can only carve out a small area.  Create the ultimate work environment for yourself with a wall-mount floating desk or ladder desk which are definitely space savers.  Add Artwork, if you have the room.  It will definitely elevate your space.    It also makes it more personal, and that’s important too!

While you might not have the ability to convert your space, use these ideas for desks, shelves and organization tools to help you work at your best.  It’s important for your space to be practical, functional AND comfortable.

Desk and Furniture– the most important furniture in a home office.  Customize your desk in a variety of ways to suit your style and budget: wood slab on trestle table, flat slab melamine on filing cabinets, console tables, dressing tables, converted vanity tables, corner L table, Wall to wall, desks, or Jack and Jill desks.

Shelving Storage

Shelving has so many options these days.  You can use floating shelves, bookshelves, bookcases, storage cubes and cubbies, consoles and cabinets, tiered storage trays, tea trolleys, utility trolleys, glass shelves in front of a window, shelves over a door, filing cabinets, and wall hung file sorters.

Organization

Organization in your space is crucial, especially if you have a lot of paper flow (like me!). Highly recommended is mobile filing cabinets, baskets/bins, wall organizers, clip and peg board, dry erase board, chalk board and magnetic board, old picture frames with new backing, desk sorters and trays, slots, bins and containers for all your bits and bobs.  Remove distractions, and bring on the inspiration.  Also, Keep cables and cords out of view!

Last Tips…

Now that you have tons of ideas for your easy home office design, whether you use a closet, under the stairs or niche,  stay healthy and hydrated and make sure to take breaks every hour or so and definitely get some fresh air!

Don’t forget about light.  Make sure you have plenty of it!  So important for all the screen time.

When you create a space that connects you to your work zone and flow, you will be more productive and happy.  For me, I have to have plants, work in a clutter-free space, and lots of light.  I also like to have scented candles, a good stash of chocolate, and music! 🙂
