Hello lovelies! I’m writing about about architectural elements you can add to your home. Specifically, why adding high impact architectural elements will be so dramatic and make your own spaces really pop!
A fireplace, especially a fireplace with a mantle is not only a focal point in your room, it can also ground your space. My own fireplace and mantle really set the tone for this parlour.

My c. 1912 heritage craftsman.
1. Fireplaces & Mantles
A fireplace — especially with a beautiful mantle — does more than just anchor your room. It creates a focal point and sets the tone for the entire space.
My own fireplace and mantle really ground our parlour and give it a sense of history. You don’t even need a working fireplace — adding a real or faux mantle can instantly change how your space feels.
You can find mantles at estate sales, vintage shops, online, or have one custom-made. They come in marble, wood, concrete, or even resin. Whether you turn it into a functional fireplace or simply use it as decor, it’s a must-have in my book!

2. Ceiling & Wall Embellishments
Want to bring in a little history or flair? Embellish your ceilings and walls with crown mouldings, panelling, coffered beams, or ceiling medallions.
Even just one of these can transform a dull, bare space. For example, adding an ornate ceiling medallion with a modern pendant light — voilà, instant charm!
In my living room, the original 65″ high panelled walls are one of my favourite features. They even have two routed grooves at the top — perfect for displaying artwork.
3. Custom Millwork
Few things say sophistication and charm like custom built-ins.
Consider adding bookcases, cabinetry, or even a custom headboard to a bare wall or awkward niche. Entrances, kitchens, and bedrooms are all great places to incorporate millwork that feels both practical and beautiful.

4. Arches & Archways
Arches date back to Roman times and have stood the test of time for a reason!
Turning doorways and openings into arches adds softness, curves, and a sense of history. They highlight spaces beautifully and make a room feel unique and intentional.

My living room has original 65″ (over 5′) high panelled walls. A bonus was finding the two routed grooves on top of the trim. It’s excellent for placing artwork.
5. Pocket Doors, French Doors & Transom Windows
These details let light flow between rooms and add elegance at the same time.
Pocket doors are perfect for creating privacy without sacrificing space. French doors and transom windows bring in more light, and stained glass (even in clear or neutral tones) is a gorgeous way to add personality.

6. Hardwood & Repurposed Wood Floors
Original hardwood floors are a treasure — but even in newer homes, you can achieve a timeless look by choosing the right width and stain.
TIP: Avoid extremes. Don’t go too narrow or too wide with your planks. Classic, medium widths and neutral stains tend to age more gracefully and won’t date your space as quickly.

7. Decorative Objects: Columns & Plinths
Take a cue from the Romans — decorative columns and plinths are easy, affordable architectural elements you can add to a room for instant impact. They make great pedestals for artwork or plants, too.
