Hello lovelies! I’m writing about about architectural elements you can add to your home. Specifically, why adding high impact architectural elements will be so dramatic and make your own spaces really pop!
A fireplace, especially a fireplace with a mantle is not only a focal point in your room, it can also ground your space. My own fireplace and mantle really set the tone for this parlour.
My c. 1912 heritage craftsman.
So, let’s look at high impact architectural elements you can add to your home! They will definitely give your space more character, definition, elegance and style. All wins in my book!
1) Turning doorways and openings into arches or archways.
Arches in architecture date back to Roman times! Arches can literally do the heavy lifting in a home but seen in our present day, they are often used to highlight a space, add something unique with curved lines, and also bring in historical.
Anyway, we know they are going to stand the test of time – hehe!
Repeating arches – symmetry + style
2) Adding real or faux fireplace mantles to your space.
My ‘must have’ in a living room! Fireplace mantles can be sourced from estate sales, online, vintage shops or custom made. They can be made of marble, wood, concrete, or resin and moulded. The beauty of a fireplace mantle is how it can make your space feel.
So whether you turn it into a REAL fireplace, or use the mantle as decor- it will change the space for sure!
3) Embellishments to ceilings and walls.
Want to bring in a little history or flair? Add crown mouldings, wall panelling, coffered beams, ceiling medallions… any of these items can be done so easily (maybe not coffered beams…) but your own creativity is ready to be unleashed! Try it!
Take that bare dull ceiling, add an ornate medallion and a modern pendant- voila! Instant new space!
My living room has original 65″ (over 5′) high panelled walls. A bonus was finding the two routed grooves on top of the trim. It’s excellent for placing artwork.
4) Custom Millwork
Nothing says high impact architecural, sophisticated and even charming more than a beautiful custom builtin feature. Do you have any spaces? Think about bare walls where you can add bookcases, how about a closet or niche that needs some attention.
Consider areas like your entrance, or kitchen as well. I have also seen some very cool headboards!

5) Add Details in Pocket Doors, French Doors or Transom Windows and Stained Glass
Pocket doors are perfect for creating temporary privacy. French Doors and transom windows are excellent ways of letting light into a space. Stained glass is such a lovely element to add to your space.
If you don’t like the heavy, coloured glass, then look for or have a clear custom piece created for a window. So pretty!
6) Hardwood Floors, or repurposed wood floors.
In new builds, most flooring is engineered hardwood. Finding original hardwood takes some work, and costs more. But, it’s out there. I just want to point out that you will see that hardwood samples come in a wide variety of different widths.
TIP: Choose a width (and stain), that will remain timeless. How? By not going too extreme in one direction. Nothing too skinny, nothing too wide. These options will trend out, and your flooring will potentially look dated.
7) Decorative Objects
Remember those Romans? Well, add in some columns or plinths is an architectural element that is super easy, and pretty cost effective as well.
Final Cut
So there you have it! You can add some of these high impact architectural elements to your home, and they will most definitely bring in something special, add character and elevate your space. Have fun!
