Brass Facts

Brass has been around and used in kitchen fittings from the late 16th Century!  Did you know that Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, which makes it last a long time?   And, various treatments were used to give brass different finishes.  The look of brass has gone from untreated to polished, antiqued, matte, rubbed, oiled to unlacquered and oxidized.  These days you can pull up all sorts of YouTube videos on how to ‘antique’  lacquered brass.  (Check here) for info.

Disclaimer

I do not profess to have any DIY experience with these methods.  But, they can provide a quick ‘fix’ or update if you know you have untreated metal hardware and you’re prepared to give it a go!

Appeal

So, all of the shiny new brass we’re seeing is waaay nicer than the finishes from even 20 years ago.  Updating your kitchen finishes to brass is really elevating the look and feel in your space.  Brass goes with many saturated rich colours, as well as warm muted colours.   Brass suits a variety of styles in cabinetry.

Complimentary

One of the things I plan for when choosing kitchen hardware is making sure that the style of fixture is complimentary to the age and character of the home.

I live in a Heritage Craftsman – so I’m choosing hardware that reflects the era and patina of our home, and the existing vintage vibe.  For me, that looks like brass oval knobs and pulls.  And, since we are adding new uppers, I’m pushing for some brass latches!  (Wish me luck!)

Pro Tip:  Mixing finishes is fine, and actually adds more layers and textures.  If that is not your preference, keeping your finishes the same, creates a balanced and cohesive look!  🙂

Shop Local

When looking at kitchen hardware, remember that it should feel comfortable to open, and be functional.  A number of local shops have fantastic selections to check out.  Places like Cantu, carry British brand Buster & Punch, and Top Knobs.  Bradford Hardware carries the gorgeous Armac Martin, seriously drool-worthy!   Lee Valley, Home Depot, Restoration Hardware, and CB2 all have tons of options.  For something bespoke, check Canadian Shayne Fox Hardware.
